Field Trip Excursion for the 35th International Geological Congress

October 26, 2016

A week prior to the 35th International Geological Congress (IGC), two field excursions through the Cape Fold Belt were organised and lead by Umvoto staff Dylan Blake (who assisted IGC Pre-11 field trip head guide Chris Jackson) and by Umvoto staff Chris and Michael Hartnady. These tours were designed to bring attention to the somewhat enigmatic history of the unique Cape Fold Belt, while taking in spectacular scenery and navigating historical mountain passes.

The field trip covered the Permo-Triassic Cape Fold Belt and Cape Supergroup, with stops along the less deformed Western Branch of the belt from Tulbagh to the Cedarberg Mountains, across the Syntaxis in the Ceres region, and along the more deformed northerly overturned Southern Branch from Montagu to Knysna. A Cape Fold Belt field trip guide book authored by Chris, Michael, Dylan and Rowena Hay captures this enthralling geological trip, narrating the geology, history and environment of South Africa.  Sixteen international IGC delegates attended across both trips, who enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were astounded by some of the text-book structural geology clearly visible within the deformed Cape Fold Belt (with one Brazilian field trip attendee even stating that chevron folding visible at the base of Swartberg Pass near Prince Albert was definitely one of the “top ten geological things to see”).
