We have gathered together a unique spectrum of professional skills and experience,
disparate interests and cultural heritages.

Rowena Hay (Managing Director)  Rowena hails from the Eastern Cape and received her MSc in Marine Geology from UCT in 1984.  After working in the mining and nuclear waste disposal industries, where she developed an interest in hydrogeological modelling, she founded Umvoto Africa in 1992.  The name derives from the respectful name some Xhosa brides us for water.  Initially she specialised in hydrogeological exploration and contamination modelling, but this work led to a wider involvement in water integrated water resource management and she has become involved projects that direct water managment policy at a provincial and national level.  She has also gained extensive experience in the related field of Disaster Risk Reduction and has carrried out work in this field for clients such as the United Nations, World Bank and Commonwealth Secretariat.  She has a particular interest inthe gender aspects of this work, and is becoming increasingly involved in the social aspects of water resource use and planning.

Rowena has led Umvoto to become an internationally recognised consultancy with a reputation for technical excellence and innovation. One of her main contributions has been her rigorous scientific approach, similar to that used in the oil industry, to quantify groundwater resources and ensure sustainable use and accurate planning.  She has brought innovative techniques to drilling deep boreholes and has pioneered the use of geoinformatics technology in the exploration and sustainable use of groundwater.  She has also introduced the concept of risk management into managing groundwater resources.   While achieving pioneering scientific and technical breakthroughs, Rowena initiated the Umvoto Internship Programme in 2002, which has contributed to building up much-needed scientific and technical skills, especially among women scientists.  Her scientific, leadership and entrepreneurial skills have been recognised by several personal and company awards.  She was  the 2009 Cape entrepreneur winner in the ninth annual Businesswomen’s Association Regional Business Achievers award and the runner-up in the 2008 Achiever Award for a Woman Scientist in Industry.  Umvoto was recently a finalist in the innovation category of the Africa SMME awards, which honour small businesses from across Africa.
