Luke Towers

Senior Intern

June 2015 - Present

Luke Towers, 27, is interning at Umvoto while working on his MSc (Hydrogeology) through the University of the Free State. Luke’s thesis is based on the on-going work Umvoto is doing in the Danakil Basin of Ethiopia. While Luke is mainly gaining experience on the Hermanus and Stanford groundwater project, he’s enjoying the exposure to diverse subjects and is particularly impressed by the rigour of the science and research at Umvoto. “Everyone is very helpful and I have been trained from the bottom up to get a full understanding of the work.” With a mining engineer dad, and a sister who’s an environmental scientist, Luke has been keen on geology since he was a young child and has an impressive rock collection to prove it. Born in Cape Town, he studied for his BSc and Hons degrees in Stellenbosch and Bloemfontein.

He’s already gained experience working in Australia with an international company undertaking coal exploration, and has undertaken Kimberlite exploration work in Botswana.
