Tyrel is a geographer specialising in using GIS and remote sensing to investigate water resources and monitor the environment. With a PhD (2014) from the University of Cape Town and B.Sc. Hons. (2007) in Environmental Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Tyrel has over 10 years’ research experience in southern and central Africa. Tyrel joined Umvoto’s Geoinformatics and Remote Sensing team in 2018 as a Senior Geospatial Analyst and became a registered SACNASP Professional Scientist in 2019.
Tyrel leads the geospatial team and undertakes work ranging from environmental analysis using remote sensing and GIS, project specific data schemas and database design to applying geospatial techniques acquire information to solve real world challenges. Additionally, he undertakes water-human interaction research, including community education through participatory mapping and citizen science projects and periodically publishes scientific papers.
