DATA ANALYTICS LEAD

Umvoto is looking for a Data Analytics Lead for appointment as soon as possible.
Umvoto is an earth science consultancy established in 1992 specialising in delivering innovative, environmentally and socially sustainable outcomes through cutting-edge hydrogeological analysis. Through this, Umvoto has collated an enormous repository of data in the fields of hydrogeology, geology, environmental science, and meteorology. Umvoto’s mission requires the critical management and evaluation of this data to produce insights intended for clients as well as internal analysis.
Through the company’s expansion, the requirement for innovative data management and the creation of digital functionalities has become a necessary undertaking. Umvoto therefore requires an experienced individual to take ownership of the data and analytics tools, systems and processes used within the company.

Key responsibilities will include data management and analysis through:

1. The transformation, collation and leveraging of all existing data within the company, ensuring quality control measures are in place and deriving insights from current and evolving datasets.
2. Basic database administration.
3. Management of diverse data sources: gathering of publicly available datasets; managing data pipelines and flows for real-time telemetrically received data; monitoring campaign field measurements; importing external laboratory results for analysis. Able to work with the transformation of data from multiple formats including Microsoft Excel, PDF, DAT file extensions, and others as may arise.
4. Owning a backlog of data-related projects within the organisation and ensuring prioritisation across major company initiatives.
5. Drive the implementation of systems (visualisation tools, dashboards, interactive web views, etc.) to ensure clients and colleagues can access project-related data and insights.

Requirements:

• Honour’s or Master’s degree in computer science, computer software/systems engineering, information systems, mathematics, physics or similar, or equivalent industry experience.
• Minimum 5 years’ of data and analytics experience.
• Experience in data transformation, sanitisation, processing and analysis from disparate and irregular sources.
• Advanced data processing, transformation and visualisation using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerBI and Microsoft PowerQuery), databases (MSSQL and PostgreSQL) and programming languages such as Python or R.
• Highly proficient in developing complex visualisations using Python, R, or similar.
• The ability to work alongside and engage with other teams on their data processing and visualisation requirements.
• Ability to work unsupervised and be self-motivated.
• Knowledge of data standards, security and principles behind data repositories.

Advantages:

• Prior experience with natural science datasets (geological, hydrogeological, hydrochemical, hydrological, ecological, and meteorological) with a geospatial component.
• Development of web based tools.
• Spatial analysis and visualisation using QGIS.
