In 2021 Umvoto was appointed by WEC Consulting Engineers on behalf of Oudtshoorn Local Municipality to drill an exploration borehole for the Calitzdorp Rural Groundwater Augmentation project, with the aim of augmenting the Klein Karoo Rural Water Supply Scheme with groundwater from the TMG in vicinity of the greater Calitzdorp area. The drilling and testing phase of the project followed previous work done by Umvoto, which included a regional hydrogeological assessment within the Calitzdorp area to identify target zones of higher groundwater potential for exploration drilling. The assessment determined that the highest groundwater potential was in the vicinity of the Calitzdorp Spa, where a borehole was sited to target a large fault zone intersecting an anticlinal fold hinge within the fractured Skurweberg Formation (Nardouw Aquifer) of the TMG. The borehole was drilled to a final depth of 270 metres into the Skurweberg Formation and subsequent test-pumping determined a recommended yield of 6 l/s. Water quality analysis found that the groundwater was brackish and would therefore require some degree of treatment prior to being fit for potable use.
