Recent footage doing the rounds on social media and the news of the damage to Darling Cellars caught the eye of some of Umvoto’s wine enthusiasts. While beer has long been known to be an occupational hazard of geologists, at Umvoto wine is right up there. Situated in Muizenberg, Cape Town, Umvoto’s location has nurtured an appreciation for the rich and diverse wine varieties produced by the unique terroir of the Western Cape. Not only does it get the creative juices flowing during late nights conceptualizing groundwater flow through complex geological settings, but it also requires a significant amount of water to go from vine to wine in your glass-something Umvoto know all about! While we wish the winery the best, and don’t make light of the severity of the situation, we can’t help but imagine managed aquifer recharge…with wine. Imagine pumping wine from a borehole, need we say more?
