Mandela Day
This Mandela Day, Umvoto and The Umvoto Foundation (TUF), in collaboration with the Groundwater Division, collaborated with HOKISA children’s home to educate children one the water cycle. The theme for 2025 is “it’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”, which Umvoto and TUF took the opportunity to address by making sandwiches for the children, putting individualised gifts together, and educating them on groundwater. The morning at HOKISA included learning about what groundwater is and why it is important; what the water table is, the difference between a spring and a borehole, and what some of the present-day challenges are around groundwater. The role future generations will have in protecting water as a resource was also highlighted, and how it can be used sustainably.
