Stellies student job shadows at Umvoto

Welcome to Kyle Louw

As a recent graduate from Stellenbosch University with a BSc in Earth Sciences (graduated December 2024), Kyle Louw took a proactive step to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional experience. He spent his December holiday gaining hands-on exposure by job shadowing at Umvoto. This opportunity allowed him to enhance his understanding of the groundwater industry and explore its real-world applications before starting his Honours degree in 2025. His account of his experience is as follows:

Job shadowing at Umvoto

“Upon arrival at Umvoto, I was warmly greeted by employees who addressed me by name, immediately making me feel welcomed and at ease. It was inspiring to observe the collaborative and supportive atmosphere within the workplace. Over the past few weeks at Umvoto, I have gained invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience. My learning extended across both office-based tasks and exciting fieldwork, providing a well-rounded introduction to the professional world of groundwater science.

Office work

My initial responsibilities included reviewing geological and hydrogeological reports from previous projects undertaken by Umvoto to gain a comprehensive understanding of the methodologies and insights applied. Additionally, I performed data processing tasks, including water level data processing for multiple boreholes.

Fieldwork

It was fascinating to see how the theoretical knowledge I gained over the years at Stellenbosch University was applied in a practical context. For example, I had the opportunity to observe yield testing in action, including methods like the step test, constant pumping, and aquifer recovery.

I also gained practical experience on groundwater sampling which involved the use of a double ball plastic bailer and the measurement of in-situ parameters such as temperature, pH and electrical conductivity, using an EC/pH meter. Additionally, I participated in borehole surveying within the Atlantis Aquifer, where we recorded the spatial locations of boreholes and their elevations above mean sea level.

A highlight of my experience was shadowing a hydrogeologist during an environmental site assessment. This was followed by a hydrocensus of the surrounding area, further enhancing my understanding of hydrogeological fieldwork and data collection.

My time at Umvoto not only broadened my technical knowledge but also provided invaluable insights into workplace dynamics and the practical challenges faced by groundwater professionals.

This experience aligns with my goal of pursuing a career in earth sciences, particularly in fields like hydrogeology and geochemistry. Engaging with experts at Umvoto has inspired me to further refine my academic focus and strengthen my skills for future opportunities. By combining my academic foundation with real-world exposure, I am preparing to take the next step in my journey to contribute to sustainable groundwater solutions.”

It is inspiring to see young talent taking strides toward a sustainable future in groundwater management. Umvoto is pleased to play a role in supporting Kyle’s growth and learning in the field of earth sciences.
