Matthew is a Geologist and Data Analyst at Umvoto, having joined the company in 2020. He grew up in Cape Town and holds a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Applied Geology from the University of the Western Cape. His MSc thesis, grounded in new U-Pb age data of the volcanism related to the Cape Granite Suite, presents a revised order for phases of magmatism for the Saldania belt and the geochemical development of the Saldanha Bay Volcanic Complex. Before joining Umvoto, Matthew spent three months in the Northern Cape working as an intern geologist at Black Mountain Mine (Zinc International, Vedanta). He is a member of the Geological Society of South Africa (GSSA), a registered Professional Natural Scientist (Geological Science) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), and has successfully completed a Data Monetization Strategy course from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Since joining Umvoto, Matthew has continued to develop his skills in scientific research and reporting, hydrogeologic assessments, water quality monitoring, drilling supervision (rotary/core/sonic), and groundwater reserve determinations. He is involved in the implementation of Umvoto’s new data management initiative and has contributed to the City of Cape Town’s data driven Decision Support System (DSS) for groundwater management. Matthew is skilled in a wide range of data handling, visualisation, and analysis programmes, including HydroGeoAnalyst, SQL, Python, R, Google Earth Pro, QGIS, and MS Office data tools (Access, Excel, Visio, Power Automate, Power BI, and Power Query).
