Gordon is a Junior Geologist who first joined Umvoto as an Intern Geologist in 2019. He has a BSc majoring in Geography, Environmental Science, and Geology with distinction from Rhodes University and a BSc (Hons) in Geology from the University of Cape Town. Gordon’s expertise includes practical and theoretical knowledge in petrography, geological field mapping, contaminated land investigations, and bioremediation. Gordon is a registered Candidate Natural Scientist (Earth Science Field of Practice) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
During his time at Umvoto, he has gained a wide range of experience in Geology and Hydrogeology. Having conducted borehole supervision for mud-rotary, percussion, and core drilling techniques, he is proficient in borehole supervision for primary coastal aquifers as well as secondary fractured rock aquifers. He is also proficient in field water quality and level monitoring due to his involvement in large-scale groundwater projects for the City of Cape Town.
Gordon is passionate about Earth system science, understanding the “big picture” and problem solving, particularly when it comes to making a positive environmental impact. He has worked with members of OUTA devising an environmental monitoring plan for the Diep River Estuary, Milnerton Lagoon carrying out independent event-based sampling. He hopes that this work will continue as the City of Cape Town looks to appoint Environmental Consultants.
