Dr Weitz has more than 10 years of experience in groundwater modelling and has been professionally registered with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). He has a background in geological sciences with his post-graduate studies focusing on hydrogeology, specialising in groundwater modelling for his PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His research has also been presented at various local and international conferences and published in both local and international peer reviewed journals.
Since joining Umvoto, Jannie has gained experience in hydrogeological assessments, borehole siting, field monitoring, drilling supervision, groundwater assessments, pumping test analysis, and sustainable yield determination. During his career at Umvoto, he has improved his numerical modelling abilities and become proficient in a number of modelling software packages, such as FEFLOW and Groundwater Vistas, and ancillary packages such as QGIS, AQTESOLV, AquaChem, FC programme, and Aquabase.
His recent focus has been on numerical modelling as part of water resilience projects for the City of Cape Town, working on unconsolidated coastal and confined fractured rock aquifers. His modelling experience has allowed exposure to the impacts of managed aquifer recharge used to augment groundwater supply as well as the impacts of groundwater abstraction on ecologically sensitive wetlands.
