Luke Towers is the Senior Hydrogeologist at Umvoto. Luke grew up in Cape Town and started his career in hydrogeology after returning to South Africa from abroad. He obtained a BSc. Earth Science from the University of Stellenbosch and a BSc. (Hons) Geology and MSc Geohydrology from the University of the Free State. For his MSc, Luke completed several months of fieldwork in the Danakil Depression of North-eastern Ethiopia. Luke is a member of the Groundwater Division of the Geological Society of South Africa and is a registered professional natural scientist (Geological and Earth Science Fields of Practice) with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). Since joining Umvoto in 2015, Luke has become proficient in the governing aspects of South African environmental and water legislation supported by a skill set developed through his exposure to Umvoto’s ongoing projects in the fields of hydrogeology, hydrology, geology, and integrated water resource management. These skills are underpinned by a meticulous approach to the scientific method and a curiosity to the resilience of natural systems. Luke is particularly passionate about finding African-solutions to African-problems in the water sector. In his spare time, he enjoys overland trips, crossword puzzles and new culinary experiences.
